The moorland and hillside grasses of Northumberland are genuinely spectacular. The fact that your seeds haven't germinated yet absolutely doesn't mean you've failed — it almost certainly means you've run into one of the most misunderstood aspects of growing grasses from wild-collected seed, which is that different grass species have vastly different germination requirements and timescales.
Why Germination is More Complicated Than You'd Think
The core issue when collecting seed from wild grasses, as opposed to buying commercially processed seed, is that you're working with completely unprocessed material that still has all its natural dormancy mechanisms intact. Other grasses and grass-like plants are an entirely different story and will simply sit there doing nothing until they've experienced a cold period. Luzula, the woodrush family which includes some beautiful species that would suit your coastal Whitley Bay garden perfectly, often requires cold stratification before it will germinate. This means the seeds need to experience a sustained cold, moist period that mimics natural winter conditions before the dormancy mechanism releases and germination can begin.
Cold stratification involves mixing seeds with slightly damp sand or placing them on moist kitchen paper, sealing them in a bag, and putting them in the fridge at around 2 to 5 degrees for four to eight weeks. After that cold period, bring them back to room temperature and sow in the normal way. If you've simply been collecting seed and sowing it onto trays at ambient temperature, you may have been asking the seed to skip a process it needs to complete first.
There's also the timing of collection to consider. Seed collected too early, before it has fully ripened on the plant, will have very poor germination rates regardless of how well you treat it. The seed needs to be fully ripe, ideally starting to disperse naturally from the plant, before collecting. For most moorland grasses this means August through to October depending on the species and the season.
Identifying Your Northumberland Grasses
Since you're not sure exactly what species you're collecting, this is actually one of the more interesting challenges to solve. The most likely candidates on Northumberland moorland and hillsides include Deschampsia flexuosa (wavy hair grass), Molinia caerulea (purple moor grass), Festuca ovina (sheep's fescue), Agrostis capillaris (common bent), and Nardus stricta (mat grass). All of these would be perfectly at home in a Whitley Bay garden given the coastal, somewhat exposed conditions.
A good field guide to British grasses is an invaluable tool here. Sow your collected seed into trays of gritty, free-draining compost (a mix of 50% seed compost and 50% horticultural grit works well), water in gently, label carefully, and leave them somewhere that will experience natural cold over winter but protected from heavy rain. An unheated greenhouse, cold frame, or sheltered spot against a wall works perfectly.
The natural cold of the winter months does the stratification work for you, and you should start seeing germination in late winter to early spring as temperatures begin to rise. This approach requires patience but is by far the most reliable method for wild-collected moorland grass seed. For faster-germinating species like Stipa, you can try indoors at room temperature first, and if nothing appears within six weeks, move the tray to the fridge for four weeks and try again.
Your Coastal Garden is Actually an Advantage
One thing worth saying is that your Whitley Bay location, about a mile from the sea, is not the disadvantage it might seem for growing moorland grasses. Many of the species you're likely admiring in Northumberland are genuinely tough, wind-tolerant plants that have evolved in exposed conditions not entirely unlike what you're gardening in. Deschampsia, Festuca ovina, and Molinia in particular are all excellent in coastal gardens and will likely thrive rather than struggle once established.
