Night blooming jasmine gone sour

Hello

In April we visited Tenerife and fell in love with Night-blooming jasmine. Back in Manchester we bought a small plant with not much hope but it went wild and now has several branches that are several feet!

When it first flowered it smelled amazing at night and by the morning the whole house was filled with the scent. The flowers eventually dropped and now instead there is a very pungent cat-urine smell. By the morning the smell is gone and its definitely not anything but this plant.

Is this normal?

Thanks

Hi @amanda-h-rosehotmail-co-uk

Good question! Night scented Jasmin other wise known as Cestrum nocturnum. Isnt a Jasmin at all but related to the nightmare family. Solanacea

Its actually a mega invasive shrub so don’t go planting it about willy nilly! But it does smell lovely when the flowers are fresher.

However as the flowers get older the chemical compound changes which is why night scented Jasmin can go from sweet smelling to smelling like cat wee. It’s still a mega beneficial plant for moths and night pollinating insects.

A number of flowers have marmite smells that can be quite pungent like Ribes or Pineapple Lillies for example

Alternatively go for the less heavy scented Trachleospurmum jasminoides instead. Though no where near as vigorous. Alternatively nip the flowers off after the sweetness dissipates.

Hope that helps!
