Ligustrum ovalifolium (Privet) pruning

Hello hello!!

when planted should it be pruned right away, let’s say an inch?!

I believe it can usually be pruned after flowering but my understanding is that’s when the ligustrum ovalifolium is well established.

any advice? Thank you.

(aka Korean privet,California privet, garden privet, oval-leaved privet)

Hi @mralphafoxtrot

Good question!

Whenever planting a new hedge it's always worthwhile giving a good prune straight away, this focuses efforts back into root establishment and starts hedge thickening.

So yes, definitely give it a good prune now!

Privet is fast growing and really benefits from a hard prune so don't panic.

Once established, then prune your privet 2 or 3 times a year. Always check for nesting birds and make sure you compost the clippings to save waste going to landfill!

Happy gardening.

Lee
