Tips For Trimming Ginkgo Tree?

Hello everyone, is that time of the year for me!

I would like to know if you have any tips on how to prune and trim a ginkgo tree. I read somewhere in the past that no pruning is generally required.

I’ve attached a few photographs, I would like to remove everything that is within the red rectangles, any issues with it? Unfortunately I don’t know the variety of this Ginkgo tree.

Thank you in advance and happy gardening everyone!

Hi @mralphafoxtrot

Good to hear from a Glinko owner. One of the most prehistoric trees still in existence!

You can trim Glinko whenever dormant so you’re a little bit late but if you’re quick should be ok. Ideally you prune them in Winter when dormant.

What you’re referring to, removing the bottom branches of a tree, is called a crown lift. See my guide and video below for more guidance on how to achieve this.

Endure your secateurs or loppers are super sharp and off you go!

Do repost pictures when you’re done so your work can help other Ninjas.

Thank you Lee!

I followed your video ‘How to Crown lift a tree: stop trees shading your house’ and here’s the result! Fingers crossed! 😃

Looks like a neat and tidy result. I'm sure those pruning cuts will seal, and the tree will look much better when next in leaf!

All the best
