Plant identification of shrubs in winter when dormant

Hello!

Hope someone can help me out. I recently moved into a new house and have started cleaning up the garden for spring. I’ve come across this plant and have no idea what it is and what to do with it. It’s a decent sized shrub, about a 120cm in height and diameter. Is it dead? Do I need to cut it back?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi @kat90

Thanks for the pictures of this unusual shrub!

It's hard to tell exactly what is without it being in flower. To properly identify a shrub or plant, you need to really be able to see the following:

  1. The leaf shape
  2. Leaf arrangement
  3. Flower colour
  4. Flower specifics
  5. Shape/form

However, digging deep into my mind's experience I believe it may be a Helichrysum italicum that's been frost damaged.  Usually, they're a silver grey colour with yellow or orange flowers. I may be wrong!

How about you post another picture in May when its in full swing then we can help a bit more!

Hope that helps

Lee

Hello!

For somewhat inexperienced people and without much knowledge about plants, the PlantNet application is very useful for recognizing plants. I don't think it will work on a dry plant, but once it starts to sprout and have new stems and leaves you can use it.

You must install it on your smartphone and it is enough to take a photo for it to tell you what plant it is. You can select to do the recognition through the leaves, flowers, stems or bark of the plant. At least it has always worked very well for me. I hope it helps you.

Greetings.
