Olive Tree Repotting Advice

Hi All. I have recently bought 2 mature olive trees that have been topped and stand in a pot that is 48cm in diameter. I have a couple of Oak Whisky Half- Barrels 70cm in diameter. I would love to pot these trees into them, however, concerned that this might be too big a leap. Most forums suggest a pot slightly bigger. Thanks.

Hello,

Transplanting mature olive trees into slightly larger oak whisky half-barrels is a reasonable idea. Ensure good drainage, use the right soil mix, transplant carefully, water well, and protect from harsh weather initially. Regular pruning and monitoring will help them thrive in their new containers.

Hi @dave-f

I agree with the above post that, yes, those pots will be fine.

It's a bit of an old wives tale that you should only pot up one size at a time. This really should only be reserved for plants that like constrained roots like Agapanthus.

The other argument is that potting up to 'too big' a size is a waste of growing media.

However, with the size of your Olive trees, you don't want to be repotting them every few years so certainly go up a few sizes. In fact, the size of them can cope with it, and it will make them more stable in high winds and make them less reliant on you watering them as much!

Hopp that helps & happy gardening.
