Conifer pruning

Hi Lee. Many thanks for your advice on pruning Spireas. Mission accomplished today! 😊. I would now like your advice on pruning conifers please? (Again, inherited last summer when we moved house) The hedge runs down one side of my garden and it's looking a bit overgrown. Height - wise, it's not too bad, but it's beginning to spill out of the border. I know they shouldn't be pruned in early Spring, due to the possibility of nesting birds and not during the growing season. So when do you recommend please?

Hi @my-tiny-garden

I'm glad my Spirea pruning guide has helped. Conifer pruning can also be really confusing for many gardeners.

The biggest problem with pruning conifers is that they don't regenerate from old wood so if you make pruning mistakes there is very little you can do to correct it. This is why when it comes to pruning Conifers you need to be careful of how much you cut off.

Check out this forum reply on conifers turning brown for more guidance. I'm already in the process of creating a full detailed conifer guide in the next few weeks on this site given how many people ask about it! So you must have read my mind.

As for birds, the best thing to do is a spot check on your hedges. I find trimming Conifer at the end of the March is usually fine and then again in September is best.

I hope that helps in the meantime!

Lee
