What Are the Best Garden Design Courses?

The honest answer is that it depends what you actually want. If you’re aiming for a formal qualification to build a design business around, an accredited diploma from somewhere like the National Design Academy or Oxford College of Garden Design is the right route, though expect months of study and a bill running into the thousands.

If you want to actually understand how to design a garden, whether that’s your own or eventually a client’s, without spending a small fortune finding out if you enjoy it first, that’s exactly what these courses are built for. I spent years attending face-to-face, year-long courses before I started designing professionally, and while I learned a huge amount, the cost and the time commitment shut a lot of people out. Learning online lets you build up your knowledge and confidence gradually, without that financial risk.

The best thing about learning online is that you take it at your own pace, letting the horticulture, botany and design principles actually sink in rather than being rushed through a syllabus. As a complete beginner gardener who moved house last year and inherited a tiered blank canvas garden I decided to sign up for Lee’s Garden Ninja Beginner Design Course. I’ve learnt such a lot and I love how Lee breaks down information into bite size sections with videos and tips on all of the basic guidelines that you need to understand. Each topic was easily digestible and you can move to particular section. You can also download images and designs for each of the aspects, with multiple examples which means that you can build a very valuable source of information as reference material for the future.  I’d recommend purchasing the course bundle so that you have access to around 30 different designs and then work your way through the courses as and when you have time.

After completing the courses last week I booked a 1 hour on-line consultation call with Lee which has given me the confidence to proceed with the design ideas I’ve been floating but wasn’t sure if they’d work. Lee reviewed my draft plan and photos before we spoke, and because I’d done my homework by completing the course, we discussed my gardening experience, the high level brief of how I want to use my garden and the effect I’m trying to achieve, so we went straight into full design mode! It was amazing, I thought I was a client on Garden Rescue! Within 30 minutes Lee had sketched out my basic design on copies of the photos I’d sent leaving us time to talk about plants/trees which would complement the design and how to resolve some of the issues with a neighbours fence, the tiers, tree stumps etc.

Lee was so warm and friendly, just like you see him on the TV, it was such a great call and I got so much out of it. Lee sent me scanned copies of the sketches he made, re-capped each area that we discussed as well as links to planting suggestions, the colour wheel etc, so I’m now all set now to put my design together.

I can’t thank Lee enough for all of the advice and encouragement, what he offers is truly fantastic so if you’re wanting work done in your garden and need independent professional advice on your project, however small or large I would 100% recommend booking in an on-line consultation with the chief garden ninja!

New build and a very overlooked garden

After living in a secluded and private plot with land in Norfolk we decided to go for a new build but with an overlooked garden. We were aware about it from the start so as soon as we settled we took on the project of improving the privacy of our back garden. That's how we found Lee, his website and YouTube channel. We were happy with what we saw and learnt from his site and  immediately booked a consultation with him. And we are so happy we did !! Even friends and with garden experience would come up with some ideas for us which wouldn't work or wouldn't do us any favours to the issues we needed to deal with. That's why we wanted to have a specialist who can highlight different points to us. The structure of the consultation was brilliant: you send the required info/pics beforehand with your concerns and at the beginning of the consultation there's a short introduction from you, and then lots and lots of information with drawings on your sketches/photos from Lee with all the tips, explanations and reasons why and how,  followed by links to the mentioned info by email the next day.

Lee's consultation took me from completely confused and stressed about my garden, to really excited about what it could become. I'm a complete novice with a new build garden. I had a basic turf & patio arrangement, but after living there a few years I realized the patio was all wrong.

As well as giving me a draft design, Lee helped me understand some basic garden design principles that let me go away and come up with a design that would work for me and my family.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 1 hour consultancy with Lee. Before the meeting we had some ideas but were worried if they'd work. After speaking to Lee we now have a clear idea of what we can do in our garden and the confidence to do it (and go bold!). How to Choose the Right Online Garden Design Course

If you’re comparing options beyond my own courses, here’s what I’d actually check before signing up to anything, learned from sitting through my own share of expensive, drawn out training:

• Can you study at any time, or are classes timed or scheduled?
• Is there a time limit on how long you can access the course?
• Are there assignments or quizzes to actually check your knowledge?
• Does the course use real-life garden design examples, or just theory?
• Can you connect with a community of other students?
• Is there feedback available, either peer review or a forum to discuss ideas?

How Much Do Online Garden Design Courses Cost?

Costs vary hugely depending on the course level, the provider, and how in-depth the content is. As a rough guide across the UK market:

1. Short courses or workshops: roughly £50 to £300, covering basic concepts and introductory skills.
2. Intermediate courses: roughly £300 to £800, more comprehensive instruction and sometimes certification.
3. Advanced or accredited diplomas: £800 to £3,000 or more, in-depth training, often with mentorship and a business-ready portfolio.

My own Garden Design for Beginners course sits at £199 for 20 hours of tuition, the Weekend Garden Makeover is £99 for a faster five hour version, and the 30 Garden Design Templates course is £29. Compared to £6,000 upwards for an in-person diploma or university study, this is a genuinely low-risk way to start, without taking out a loan to find out if garden design is for you.

How Long Does It Take to Become a Garden Designer?

That depends entirely on your background and the path you choose. A formal degree in horticulture or landscape design typically takes two to four years. But plenty of successful garden designers, myself included, have built their careers through a mix of practical experience, self-study and shorter courses rather than a single long qualification.

My courses are built to fit around your life rather than the other way round. With video lessons, quizzes, and no time limit on study, you can build real, applicable skill in as little as a few months, depending on how much time you put in. Whether you’re starting from nothing or sharpening skills you already have, the path is as flexible as you need it to be.

Do You Need a Degree or Formal Qualification?

No. A degree in landscape architecture or horticulture can be a strong foundation, but it isn’t a requirement for working in garden design. Plenty of designers have built genuinely successful careers through self-study, practical experience and shorter, focused courses rather than a formal qualification. What actually matters is a combination of:

Creativity

Garden design involves genuine artistic expression, the ability to picture and create a space that doesn’t exist yet.

Plant Knowledge

Understanding plants, their growth habits and environmental needs, and how they complement each other, is central to good design. This is where hands-on experience as a gardener genuinely counts, and it’s something you build up over time through practice, visiting gardens, and researching plants properly rather than guessing.

My courses teach you how to build a planting plan using logic rather than memorised plant lists, even with little prior experience.

Design Skills

Balance, proportion, scale, rhythm and colour theory are what actually separate a garden that works from one that doesn’t, and they’re teachable. This is exactly what my Garden Design for Beginners course is built around.

Technical Proficiency

Familiarity with design software, drafting, and construction techniques all help, but don’t let a lack of technical skill put you off starting. You can always bring in a landscaper for the more technical side of a build. As for drawing up a design, practice genuinely does make perfect, and I teach the top tips that got me started with my own artistic side of the job.

Client Communication

If you’re designing for others, understanding what a client actually wants and translating that into a workable design matters as much as any technical skill. That means listening properly, then using your own expertise to steer them if what they’re asking for won’t actually work for their space.

A degree can give you a structured education and formal credentials, but plenty of successful garden designers, myself included, have built real careers through practical experience, talent and continuous learning instead. What matters most is a genuine passion for design and a willingness to keep learning.

How Much Can You Earn as a Garden Designer?

Earnings vary significantly depending on experience and clientele. Glassdoor lists the average UK garden designer salary at somewhere between £27,000 and £43,000 a year working full time, though this varies by region and how you structure your work.

If you build a reputation as an award-winning designer, earning potential increases, though entering show gardens and building accreditation can be costly in itself. Working within a larger consultancy can reduce the risk of being underpaid early on, and additional accreditations can help push your rate up over time.

Is Garden Design a Good Career?

Training as a garden designer is genuinely rewarding, but my honest advice is that it won’t make you a millionaire, and I’d be doing you a disservice pretending otherwise. It isn’t the most lucrative career, whatever social media might suggest. Most designers combine it with other garden maintenance or consultancy work to keep income steady year round, since most people only think about hiring a designer when the sun’s out.

Opening up your services beyond peak season, winter design packages or year-round maintenance work, is genuinely one of the better ways to smooth that out. Garden design also opens doors to a wider portfolio career, writing, guest speaking, consultancy, that most people don’t consider when they start.

Nothing is stopping you from learning garden design and finding out for yourself, without the risk of committing to years of formal study first.
