Can anyone please tell me what is wrong with this clematis? It has been in this pot, in this position, for the past two years but this year it seems to be dying from the bottom as it still has buds at the very top of the plant.

It looks like leaf spot so wondering could it be a fungal infection? I always thought that clematis is vigorous so would need a very large container or planted in the ground. Could you take it out and look at roots to see if they are healthy and maybe repot to something bigger.

Thanks JP. I have space in my garden so I think I will put it there once I've looked at the roots. I will miss it from the rear of my shed but will look for something else that will do better in a pot. Thanks.
